Biography:

Miguel Angel Maymí-Malavé is the son of a Desert Storm/Shield veteran of the U.S. Army and grew up primarily in Ft. Hood Texas, but also spent some time in California and Washington. He has worked in a professional capacity as a Lighting Designer, Dramaturg, Photographer, and Master Electrician, and is very happy to be at Texas A&M’s Performance Studies program as a next step and learning from experts leading the field.

Miguel’s undergraduate studies were conducted at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, where he graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Theatre and a minor in Anthropology. While at SFA he participated in a design, directing, stage managing, dramaturgical, translation, or crew head position in over 30 shows. In Anthropology, he took courses in Primatology, Forensics, North American Archaeology, Maya and Aztec Archaeology (pre-colonial), Cultural and Physical Anthropologies, and Cultural Geography. That experience has given him a lot of insight into the motivations, organizations, and expressions of a wide variety of people and a hunger to learn more about where they come from.

At Texas A&M he is conducting research on the cultural identities of Guatemalans, particularly as a result of the Guatemalan Civil War that lasted until 1996. This is in hopes of beginning a greater dialogue on the global effects of genocide and ethnocide. He works with student organizations and Guatemalans of all backgrounds in diaspora, and hopefully in Guatemala, to better understand who they are, what makes them who they are, and how they feel others should view them. He also conducts work on restoration and revitalization of the aesthetic, performance and artistic expression of cultures that are the victims of ethnocide by exploring fine arts programs in their communities.
